Quick Install Tips for ProVia’s Double Storm Door
Introduction:
Here are the critical steps for installing a ProVia Double Storm Door. For complete installation and safety instructions, click the link in the video description. Let’s get started.
**For ease of installation, you may remove the sash and screen except for the Spectrum Storm Door.
- Begin by checking the walls for plumb.
- Prep the opening according to instructions. (Video to show Michael pushing on brickmold)
- Measure the opening width. Add 2” for a leaf hinge application or 2 ¼” for a piano hinge application. Using this measurement mark and cut the header to overall length.
- Re-notch the header Z-bar.
- Place the header Z-bar in the opening against the jamb header.
- Predrill a 3/32” pilot hole at each end of the Z-bar header.
- Secure using a #6 x 1” panhead screw.
- Measure the opening height of the active door. Use that measurement to cut the Z-bar to length. Repeat for inactive door. (show Michael measuring the height)
- If desired, add the thickness of the sill to the length of the Z-bar and notch as shown. (show notched z-bar)
- Position the active door in the opening. At the top, predrill a 3/32” pilot hole and secure with a #6 x 1” panhead screw.
- Marginally shift the bottom of the z-bar away from the jamb side to establish an approximate 1/8” margin between Z-bar header and the door slab.
- At the bottom, predrill a 3/32” pilot hole and secure with a #6 x 1” panhead screw.
- Repeat these steps for the inactive door. (show Michael setting inactive slab in place)
- Inspect the top margin and make any adjustments needed. (show center top of doors being even.)
- At the second installation hole from the bottom, slightly shift the Z-bar towards the center, predrill and install a #6 by 1 inch pan head screw. (show margin below bottom hinge)
- At the second installation hole from the top, slightly shift the Z-bar towards the hinge side, predrill and install a #6 by 1 inch pan head screw.
- Predrill and install a #6 x 1” pan head screw in the center Z-bar installation hole.
- Repeat for the inactive slab.
- Open each door, predrill, and install all hinge screws - being careful to NOT over tighten. Check to be sure each door opens and closes freely with no hinge bind.
- Install sweeps into the bottom expander and then install onto the active door.
- Position the expander so the sweeps lightly touch the threshold.
- Measure the interior side of the active door from the top of the slab to the bottom of the expander.
- For mortise hardware, use this measurement and cut the astragal to length from the bottom only. Notch as needed per instruction. (Video to show Michael pointing at pre-notched astragal for mortise)
- For surface mounted hardware, use this measurement and cut the astragal to length from top only. Notch as needed per instruction. Note, surface mounted hardware does not get installed at this time. (Video to show Michael pointing at pre-notched astragal for surface)
- Place the astragal on the inactive door slab, flush with top of the door. Tap astragal onto the door slab to allow for a 1/8th – 3/16th inch margin. (Video to show margin between astragal and active slab)
- For the bottom expander, measure from the hinge side of the door to the inside edge of the astragal tongue.
- Cut the expander to length from the hinge side end, leaving the factory edge against the astragal tongue.
- Position the bottom expander on the inactive door slab.
- Secure all expanders and the astragal using the provided screws. (Video to show placement of 1-2 screws)
